1973 All-Star Accolade: For his dependability in defence which combines with his natural hurling skill to establish him as one of the great corner backs of today

Phil'Fan'Larkin first played for Kilkenny in 1959 when he won a Leinster minor medal and won his first senior All-Ireland medal in 1963. He played on the losing All-Ireland side of 1964 and after a period of absence from the county side returned for the 1969-70 National League. From then until his retirement from the side in 1980 he was an ever present member of the Kilkenny team. During this period he won four senior All-Ireland medals and captained the victorious National hurling league side in 1976. His proudest moment came when he captained james Stephens to win their first All-Ireland Club Championships in 1976. A feature of this game was the ability of 'Fan' (5' 4"1/2) to outplay Ray Cummins (6' 4') while playing at full-back. 'Fan' is regarded as one of the classiest corner-backs of all time, a tenacious tackler who had the ability to size up a situation in a split second. Testament to his commitment and ability is that he won his'last All-Ireland in 1979 when 38 years of age and won his second All-Ireland Club Championship medal playing at 41 years of age. He has served as a county senior and U-21 selector and is deeply involved in underage activities in the club.
