Joe had a fruitful underage career winning both Minor and U-21 All-Ireland Medals. He first hit national headlines with an outstanding display in the 1976 All-Ireland Club Championship Final. The opening match report of Irish Times correspondent, Paddy Downey, was as follows: "Only rarely can it be said, without reservations, that the heroic efforts of one player fashioned victory for his side in any team game. A young man named Joe Hennessy filled that role in Thurles yesterday". Throughout his long county and club career, he has maintained an extraordinary high level of committment and skill which makes him one of the most popular players in the game today. Joe has perfected the art of quick delivery and his uncanny positional sense makes him a hurler in the best Kilkenny tradition. As testament to his versatility he has the unique distinction of being awarded All-Star awards in three different positions - right half back, midfieid and right full back.
