Liam 'Chunky' O'Brien first experienced senior inter-county competition in 1969 and won his first senior All-Ireland medal in 1972 when his devastating solo runs and long range accuracy made a huge contribution to Kilkenny's victory. He won a further All-Ireland medal in 1974 and his brilliant display in the 1975 All-Ireland final earned him the RTE "Man of the Match" award. His displays in 1975 not only earned him an All-Star Award but also the much coveted Caltex Award. 'Chunky' won his fourth All-Ireland in 1979 when playing at left half forward he scored 1-7 of Kilkenny's total and again received the RTE "Man of the Match". During his club and inter-county career, he was regarded as one of the most accomplished hurlers in his or any other era. He won an All-Ireland Club Championship in 1976 and captained the Kilkenny senior hurling team in 1977.
